The Kingdom of Dahomey
Between 1600 and 1900, the Kingdom of Dahomey was the most powerful and sophisticated state in West Africa. Ruled by 12 successive kings from the city of Abomey, it built extraordinary palaces, commanded a professional army that included the legendary Agojie — an elite all-female fighting force that inspired the 2022 film "The Woman King" — and maintained a highly organised system of government, taxation and trade.
"Standing before the throne of King Béhanzin, looking at the royal bas-reliefs that depict battles, conquests and ceremonies, I realised I was in the presence of a civilisation as complex, sophisticated and worthy of admiration as any in the ancient world. Abomey demands to be known."
Royal Palaces of Abomey
The Royal Palaces of Abomey are a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a complex of mud-walled compounds built by successive kings, including the palaces of Gézo and Glélé, housing royal courts, tombs and treasure halls. The Historical Museum within them displays one of the most remarkable collections of royal African artefacts on the continent.
Abomey Historical Heritage
Tapestries, thrones, war trophies and royal altars fill the museum, each object telling a story your guide will bring powerfully to life. The Agojie — Dahomey's Amazon warriors — trained and served here, an elite all-female regiment active from the 17th century until the French colonial conquest in 1892.
Traditional Culture
Appliqué tapestry-making remains a living art form in Abomey, still practised by descendants of the royal families who once commissioned these vivid fabric artworks depicting the lives and reigns of Dahomey's kings.
