Discover Pendjari National Park
In an era when wildlife in West Africa has been devastated by poaching and habitat loss, Pendjari National Park stands as a remarkable conservation success story. Covering 4,800 km² of Sudanian savanna in northern Bénin, it is part of the larger W-Arly-Pendjari (WAP) complex — one of the largest protected areas in all of Africa at 36,000 km², and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017. It has been managed by African Parks in partnership with the Beninese government since 2017.
"We had pulled over to photograph a herd of elephants crossing the road when our guide whispered: 'Don't move.' Three minutes later, a lion — a male, full mane — walked out of the grass not 40 metres from the vehicle and sat, watching the elephants pass. We sat in silence for 20 minutes, in absolute awe. Pendjari does not disappoint."

Safari Experience
Game drives take place in a private 4WD vehicle with a certified park guide, typically at dawn and late afternoon when animals are most active. Pendjari offers a genuine safari experience with far fewer vehicles than East African parks — often, sightings are yours alone.

Best Time to Visit Pendjari
The dry season from December to May is best — animals gather around water sources, vegetation is lower, and sightings are more frequent. January to March is the peak window for lion and elephant sightings.
How to Reach Pendjari
Pendjari is roughly 480km north of Cotonou, about 7 hours by road via Natitingou, where most safari lodges are based. All our safaris include private transport from Cotonou, so you don't need to arrange the journey yourself.
Safari Duration

What to Bring
Neutral-coloured clothing, a hat, sunscreen, binoculars if you have them, and a camera with a zoom lens. Mornings and open-vehicle game drives can be cool — a light jacket is worth packing even in the dry season.
