Dantokpa Market
The Dantokpa Market alone is worth the trip. It is one of the largest markets in all of West Africa — a labyrinthine city within a city spanning roughly 3km², where you can find anything from carved Vodun statues to imported motorcycles, alongside its famous Marché des Fétiches, dedicated to Vodun spiritual items used in ceremonies across the region.
Art & Culture
Fondation Zinsou is one of the best contemporary African art museums on the continent, with free admission — a striking contrast to Dantokpa's chaos, and a good way to see how Bénin's artistic scene engages with its own history and identity.
Beaches
Cotonou's urban Atlantic beach is where locals unwind — bars, grilled fish stalls, football games in the sand, and dramatic ocean sunsets, all a short ride from the city centre.
