The Black River of Adjarra
The Rivière Noire — Black River — takes its name from the dark tone of its waters as it winds quietly through the Ouémé department in southeastern Bénin, connecting the town of Adjarra toward Porto-Novo as a tributary of the Ouémé River. Bordered by raffia palms and fertile, rural land, it has long been used by local communities for transport, fishing and agriculture — and has more recently become a small but growing tourist attraction, explored by traditional pirogue.
The river moves so slowly that the pirogue barely needs steering — just the quiet dip of a single pole, raffia palms leaning in from both banks, and village life continuing exactly as it has for generations.
Adjarra: The City of Drums
Adjarra is officially known in Bénin as the "Cité des Tambours" — City of Drums — for its long tradition of drum-making and musical instrument craftsmanship. The market for tam-tams and other traditional instruments remains one of the commune's cultural highlights, alongside its six historic arrondissements.
Basketry
Raffia basketry is one of Adjarra's best-known crafts, using palm and reed harvested locally along the river. Skilled weavers produce baskets, mats and woven objects using techniques passed down through generations of artisan families.
Traditional Crafts
Beyond basketry and drums, Adjarra's artisans work in terracotta pottery, wood carving and forged metalwork, alongside wooden masks used in Vodun ceremonies — traditional religion remains the majority faith in the commune, and Vodun festivities are among its most important cultural celebrations.
Local Workshops
A visit here pairs a peaceful river excursion with genuine encounters with basket-weavers, drum-makers and sodabi distillers, in a part of Bénin that sees far fewer visitors than Ganvié or Ouidah. Most workshops welcome visitors to watch the process and buy directly from the artisans.
